West Midnapore (West Bengal) [India], August 23 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a protest on Friday demanding justice for the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Protesters chanted “We want justice.”
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, who participated in the protest, called for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, asserting that justice cannot be served unless she steps down.

“Today, there is only one demand: Mamata Banerjee should resign, because if she does not, justice will not be served,” Ghosh told ANI.
In related developments, Sealdah Court has granted permission for polygraph test of RG Kar Medical College and hospital former principal Dr Sandip Ghosh and five others in connection with the case. The five others include four doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor and one civic volunteer.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has tasked the CBI with investigating irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. CBI will also investigate former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali’s case.
Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj ordered SIT to hand over the investigation documents to CBI by 10 am on August 24. After three weeks, the CBI will report the progress of this investigation to the High Court. The court summoned that report on September 17.
The petitioner Akhtar Ali can apply to the CBI if necessary for security, the court directed.
The rape and murder of the trainee doctor have triggered widespread outrage and protests in cities including Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Kolkata, with calls for justice for the victim and punishment for the accused.
The postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
On August 14, the protest site and hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalised by a mob, leading to police intervention.
To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC), around the Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from Sunday (August 18) to Saturday (August 24). (ANI)
